Joseph Giovinazzo Sensei Promoted to 5th Dan

Joseph Giovinazzo Sensei began his aikido studies at La Trobe University dojo in August 1987, while a postgraduate student in music composition. At the time, his instructor was Ray Oldman Shihan, with whom he has maintained a strong friendship. For the past 25 years Joseph Sensei has been instructing at Clifton Hill Dojo (Melbourne), focusing on foundational aspects and the development of core principals such as “ki extension”, “one-point”, and “ma-ai”. Today he continues to instruct and trains regularly at CHD under several senior ranking instructors, aspiring to continue the legacy of Sugano Shihan.

For many years, Joseph Sensei has been actively involved in Aiki Kai National Summer Schools held in Melbourne, overseeing logistics of the dojo set up and organising social events. Contributing his time and skills to Aiki Kai is something that Joseph Sensei sees as an important part of his aikido training and commitment to Aiki Kai Australia. Known to love a social gathering, Joseph Sensei whole heartedly enjoys these events for connecting with his fellow aikidoka on and off the mat.

Joseph Sensei’s dedication to aikido and the well-being of his aikido friends and comrades was made evident during the Covid lockdowns when he established online training infrastructure for Victoria. Setting up the Clifton Hill virtual dojo, he urged students to stay connected with aikido through the exploration of independent, but internet connected training in their own homes, and encouraged fellow instructors to contribute to online sessions.

As an integral part of his regular training, Joseph Sensei practices a series of aikido related meditative movements and exercises in his garden every morning. Amidst lush greenery and the tranquil sounds of his pond and beloved fish, he uses this time to focus on and expand his personal study of aikido. Joseph Sensei’s passion and enthusiasm for Aikido have contributed significantly to the moulding of his artistic and personal disposition.

Joseph Sensei has four wonderful women in his life (his three daughters and his wife) who are exceptionally proud of his achievements in aikido.
