New State Area Representative for NT!

Northern Territory Aikido – Area Representative

On behalf of the Trustees, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Mark McLaughlin as the new Area Representative for the Northern Territory.

Mark began his Aikido journey in 1999 in Victoria. In 2009, he relocated to Darwin and continued training under Aiki Kai Australia with Richard Barnes Sensei and Brian Johns Sensei. When the Darwin Aikido dojo parted ways with Aiki Kai Australia in 2014, Mark remained with the organisation, together with a small group of students under Szabo Sensei. Working closely with Mike and Marie Petery Sensei in Alice Springs, he was instrumental in establishing Aikido Northern Territory.

As Mark steps into this new role, we wish to acknowledge Marie Petery Shihan for her many years of dedicated service as Area Representative, following Richard Barnes Sensei, who first introduced Aikido to the Northern Territory in 1965. Marie has made a significant contribution to the growth and continuity of Aikido in the NT and will continue to serve Aiki Kai Australia in her other capacities, including as National Area Representative.

Mark has consistently demonstrated great dedication through his rigorous training, leadership, and commitment to both learning and teaching Aikido in Darwin. Since 2014, he has served as President of the Aikido NT Association and was part of the Next Generation team representing Aiki Kai Australia at Hombu. His organisational skills, leadership experience, and unwavering support for the National Body give us full confidence that he will excel in this important role.

We warmly encourage everyone to support Mark as he takes on this responsibility, ensuring the continued strength and success of Aikido in the Northern Territory.

Kind regards, Marie

Outgoing State Area Representative for Northern Territory, Marie Petery Shihan.
