David Brown has passed away

Aiki Kai Australia notes with sadness the passing of David Brown Shihan, a close student of Sugano Sensei from the time he arrived in Australia.

A pioneer of Aikido in this country, David inspired and taught generations over six decades, including many of the country’s most senior teachers. During the formative years of Aiki Kai Australia he variously served as a member of the TTC, Dan Grading panel, and as Victorian Area Representative. His enduring contribution is deeply remembered and appreciated.

David was also an extraordinary polymath: a watchmaker, violin maker, shakuhachi player and maker, sumi-e painter, kyūdōka and inventor whose original achievements in Aikido, traditional arts and craftsmanship earned him wide respect.

In our early days David was also a great friend and presence in my own family. His many friends and students will miss him greatly.

The Sugano Foundation extends deepest condolences to his family as well as all who knew, loved and were inspired by him.
